It is the end of the week and, as usual, things did not go exactly the way I planned. But here is where everything stands.
The tenants finished patching the holes in the walls and took most of the sheets, clothes, and baskets they had stored in the garage. They still have a mattress and a dresser left, but they said they will come back for those. In the meantime, I have been moving things over to the house in small chunks every day. It is not much at a time, but it adds up.
I was supposed to go back to my Apopka rental on Tuesday to paint, finish the door job, and change the AC thermostat. That did not go perfectly. I realized I forgot my small screwdrivers, which meant I could not change the thermostat at all. The only thing I managed to do was paint the inside drywall that had been patched and the exterior beams around the door. The exterior paint was giving me trouble and now I know why. The good paint was actually at the house we are moving into. The one I took to Apopka was old and drying weird, but I still put on one coat just to get something done. I also took notes and made a longer list of small repairs I noticed around the house that I will need to tackle soon.
The following days were spent buying supplies, hauling things around, and taking measurements. A painter came to the new house and painted the master bedroom since that room is already cleared out and only needs a deep clean. I emptied out my little storage area at home and moved a lot of my office stuff to the new house too. Slowly but surely the place is filling up.
At one point I ended up getting into a pretty heated debate with my stepdad. It felt like he kept trying to give me the short end of the stick in every negotiation. We eventually worked things out, but I was fired up for a full day. I barely slept and woke up with a headache the next morning that stayed with me until bedtime. Things seem fine for now and I hope they stay that way.
My wife also stopped by the contractor’s place to grab the key to the new house, but she forgot to give it to me this morning. I drove all the way to that side of town and could not get in, so it turned into a wasted trip. I did manage to get a haircut and help my stepdad with some things, but I really wanted to start working on the house. It is frustrating, but setbacks happen and I knew this week was going to be full of them.
Tonight I packed up a few more things so I can take them over tomorrow. I will have to double up on my to do list to make up for today’s delays, but as long as I keep the momentum going I should be fine.
