The past couple of days have been a long haul. The contractor who is also a good friend of mine came out to the rental property to finally replace the door and fix the water intrusion issue. I was there working with him, and what we thought would be a straightforward job turned into a marathon. We ended up making several trips to Home Depot, and at one point we broke the original door jamb. That meant we had to buy a jamb kit and build a new one from scratch. The instructions were confusing and not helpful at all, so it took us a while to figure out the right way to do it. To make things better, we found some termite damage in one of the support pieces, so I had to call pest control to come out and handle it. We finished Thursday night, just getting the door installed before it got too dark to see.
On Friday morning we went back to adjust the door. The goal was to make sure everything was level and sealed since the night before was more about just getting it in place. The pest control guy came, but he turned out to be just the sales rep. He told us not to patch the drywall or close anything up until the treatment was actually done. That basically ended the work day early. No point in closing it up just to open it again.
At the same time all of this was happening, I was dealing with work issues through my phone. Two cremation machines had been down most of the week, and the case volume was rising. I was going back and forth between my employees, managers, and the funeral directors to keep things moving. It felt like juggling a house project with one hand and a full time crisis with the other.
When we wrapped up Friday morning, the contractor and I went to Chipotle for lunch to catch up and talk business. After that I went to my parents house to check in and work on creating inventory for my side hustle. My wife was out and would not be home until late, so I took my time. I ate, showered, cleaned the kitchen, and continued working on my laptop.
I ended up staying up until 3 in the morning working. I created a full business plan for my side hustle that will kick off next year. It felt good to finally see something on paper that I have been carrying around in my head for a while.
Things with my wife are better now. We are talking again and the tension has settled down. That alone made the long week feel a little lighter.
